Mennonite Mutual Insurance is an Alberta company that provides property and liability insurance for homes, farms and businesses. Our policyholders attend Mennonite churches and various evangelical churches with similar Confessions of Faith. Many of these churches are “member churches” as defined by MMI’s By-Laws. MMI board members are policyholders who are elected by delegates from the member churches. By insuring with Mennonite Mutual, our policyholders help to provide mutual aid within their faith communities and help to support the Mennonite Mutual Compassion Fund as well as the work of Mennonite Central Committee Alberta.

Mennonite Mutual Insurance operates exclusively in Alberta. Mutual aid has been practised within Mennonite communities since the early 1900’s and the company has been licensed and regulated by the government of Alberta since 1960. MMI participates in a national reinsurance facility which gives them additional financial strength and security for policyholders.

Mennonite Mutual is the whole owner of a subsidiary company, Mennonite Insurance Agency Ltd. It is through that agency that automobile insurance and other insurance products are offered to our constituents.

Our Mission

To provide mutual aid by meeting the property and casualty insurance needs of the Mennonite community and those of like faith in Alberta, thereby supporting and strengthening the church.

Our Vision

To be an organization of Mennonite believers and others of like faith that consistently exemplifies the principles in Galatians 6:2, "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." (NIV)

Compassion Fund

The Compassion Fund allows MMI to assist member church congregations in ministering to people in their communities who suffer unexpected crises. Matching dollar-for-dollar with the local congregation requesting aid, Mennonite Mutual Insurance may contribute up to $3,000 per situation. The fund is based on 1% of MMI's investment portfolio.

To apply, please contact your local church representative.

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Contributions

Mennonite Mutual Insurance has been able to share in "mutual aid" in a broader sense through its commitment of donating to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).

Over the past two decades, MMI has donated over $2.5 million to MCC.

Our History

Mutual Aid in Alberta traces its history to the beginning of the Anabaptist movement (1530's) in Europe.

In the early 1900's, Mennonite settlers carried the concept with them as they immigrated to the various communities and farming areas in Alberta.

Incorporation as a licensed insurance company took place in 1960 to comply with the province's financial and insurance regulations. MMI is licensed and regulated by the Province of Alberta.

MMI continues to thrive today as Mennonites and other Christians seek to support one another within their local communities of faith.
